Hello Ian. If I'am right you're moste likely to have gem SASS (which is part of Ruby) on your Mac. Try not to install that gem. Just try to run sass with watch command : sass --watch scss:css e.t.c. Hope this helps ;) You can try sudo gem update --system.
sudo gem install sass should work.
It'll ask for a password, which is the one you use to login to the machine.

Same problem, but there is no password for my machine. Terminal won't take 'enter' or nothing as a password.
